Amazon deforestation accelerates, 55% increase from January to April

While global attention is focused on corona viruses, deforestation of Amazon rainforest is accelerating this year with record-breaking or even more serious record-breaking deforestation last year.

According to data released by the National Institute for Space Studies (INPE) in Brazil, which is tracking the deforestation using satellite images, the total deforestation area of Amazon from January to April of this year is 1202 square kilometers. It increased by 55% year-on-year, marking the highest ever since the monthly survey started in August 2015. 1202 square kilometers is more than 20 times the area of New York City Manhattan.

There is a question about the effort to protect the Amazon under Jair Bolsonaro administration in Brazil. Bolsonaro is skeptical of climate change and advocates agricultural and mining development in the Amazon.
